On June 29, Reddit quietly started asking some users to upload a photo ID. By July 6, the r/privacy thread had racked up 2,172 upvotes and 437 comments. The message was clear: this isn’t just about Reddit. It’s about where the internet is heading.

Reddit’s age verification pilot runs through third-party services — Yoti and Persona. You upload a government ID or take a selfie. Then the third party verifies your age. Reddit gets a confirmation token but, supposedly, not your actual ID data. Supposedly.

But here’s the catch: once your real identity is linked to a Reddit account, that connection exists forever. Even if Yoti or Persona deletes your biometric data, Reddit knows account #foobar123 belongs to a verified adult. That’s a permanent drop of anonymity. And Reddit isn’t the only platform moving this direction.

How Age Verification Actually Works

So Yoti and Persona both use document scanning. Snap a photo of your driver’s license or passport, sometimes add a live selfie for liveness detection. Yoti claims it retains only a “secure digital token” and deletes the original document. Persona’s policy is vaguer — “as long as reasonably necessary.” We reviewed both policies during our research. The key question neither answers clearly: what happens to biometric data after verification?

Still, the bigger concern isn’t what the verification companies do. It’s what the platform does with the verified identity token afterward. That token becomes a permanent part of your profile — available for ad targeting, behavioral analysis, and law enforcement requests.

The Privacy Cost Is Real

Yet the moment your real name connects to an anonymous account, the privacy calculus shifts. Your browsing history — subreddits, comments, upvotes — becomes personally attributable.

The Three-Layer Defense Framework

If platforms demand your identity, the question becomes: how do you protect what’s left of your privacy after verification?

So we built a three-layer framework based on our own workflow testing. Think of it as a privacy stack — each layer handles a different threat.

Layer 1 — Platform Level: Data Minimization

Submit the minimum required data. Also skip optional fields. Use a separate email. Don’t sign in with Google or Apple ID.

What we did in practice: we created a dedicated Reddit account with a unique email via an alias service — just the ID document, nothing else. But this layer has a hard limit: it can’t stop the platform from storing what you already submitted.

Layer 2 — Network Level: VPN Encryption

After verification, your connection metadata — IP, DNS queries, browsing patterns — can still be tied back to your account. So this is where a VPN fits.

So a VPN encrypts your connection, preventing ISP logging of your post-verification activity. It also hides your real IP from the platform.
